Danville Register & Bee
To the editor:
I also do not believe Dan River’s 125th anniversary was any reason for Danville to celebrate. I have my doubts that Danville will be a part of Dan River’s future.
But I understand that Dan River Inc. and its employees would celebrate the anniversary. In honor of that outstanding accomplishment, perhaps Dan River will repair its sign proclaiming Danville as the “Home of Dan River Fabrics.”
I’m happy for the employees who remain here, and even more so for others who have been invited back because their overseas replacements were unable to perform their duties with the same expertise and efficiency. It is indeed true that Dan River operates three distribution centers here. I only wish they were staffed by Dan River employees instead of outsourced by an out-of-state company.
Provided Dan River can “make ends meet” - and the recent letter writers are correct - Dan River’s future will be in Danville. Perhaps the new owners would also like to invest in Danville’s future and restore the White Mill. Renting it out as office and restaurant space might be a better moneymaker than selling it.
That won’t make up for losing the Schoolfield Recreation Center. That was a devastating loss. Please know, however, that some citizens did “open wallets and roll up their sleeves to save a building,” which would have been used by the community, benefiting many and preserving a special part of our history as well.
But since our own vice mayor actually praises CVS for “continuing that tradition” of the recreation center, and CVS seems to think a corner plaque “preserves history,” it’s hard to imagine what the future holds for Danville’s historical heritage.
